1789 James Fenimore Cooper was the son of a wealthy, landowning Judge William Cooper, born in Burlington, New Jersey. 1790 Family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by Judge Cooper near Otsego Lake. 1811 Married Susan DeLancey and settled down as a gentleman farmer. 1820 Precaution was published. This was his first book and it was a failure. 1821 The Spy (his second book published), was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and was an immediate success. 1823 Cooper published The Pioneers 1840 The Deerslayer was published 1841 The Pathfinder was published. 09/14/1851 James Fenimore Cooper died, and was buried in the cemetery of Cooperstown |
